Inspiration comes in many forms, but once inspired most people don’t have a clear next step.
Having a front-row seat to watch how the healthcare industry handled the outbreak of the pandemic prompted the South Carolina native, Buni Johnson, to consider leaving the field. Feeling burned out and unappreciated, Johnson began to consider a different path. Although she was unhappy working long shifts in the medical field, she was not ready to throw in the towel and retire.
“Age 60 is not what it was 10 or 20 years ago,” Johnson said. “I was ready to change my whole life, I just didn’t know how to start.”
Johnson began doing research on how to turn her passion for embroidery into a side hustle, which would allow her to reduce her hours at the family health practice and would allow her to make money at a hobby she was passionate about. Shortly after starting to research her options, she was contacted by Max Jones, a Career Ownership Coach™ for The Entrepreneur’s Source®, the nation’s leading career coaching franchise.
“His call came at such a wonderful time. It was just meant to be. He didn’t tell me I was too old to start over,” Johnson said. “He was my cheerleader.”
TES provides strategic, personalized coaching for people who want to transition out of their current careers and achieve self-sufficiency and financial freedom. Jones helped her identify her Income, Lifestyle, Wealth, and Equity™ goals to chart a new course at no cost.
As a nurse, Johnson had the opportunity to work with many different individuals. Over time, she began to realize her large employer was not giving her co-workers the opportunity to achieve their full potential. “Working with Max made me realize how strongly I felt about mentoring people,” Johnson said. “I knew I could help my employees use their strengths to achieve their career goals as a small-business owner instead of just trying to make money.”
Despite a love of embroidery, Johnson quickly realized franchising would help her achieve her goals and provide her with a profitable return on investment. Jones helped open Johnson’s eyes to the possibility of a different future as a business owner. “I didn’t think I had the business sense or the money to make business ownership attainable. By providing me with information and guidance, Max gave me confidence in my ability to run a business successfully.”
With the help of her brother-in-law, Jeffrey, she decided to connect with HomeTeam Inspection Service. Jeffrey was in a similar situation and was ready to step back from his grueling career as a contractor. “I did not have a background in home inspections. I don’t need them to hold my hand, but they are there if I need support. They’ll help if you want them to, but they don’t micromanage,” Johnson said.
HomeTeam Inspection Service is the industry leader in home inspections, focusing on assisting buyers, sellers, and real estate professionals with a wide variety of home and business inspections. The home-based business relies on a team approach to provide speedy inspections, and franchise owners can ramp up profits quickly by capitalizing on partnerships the company has with two major real estate companies.
After some hassle making arrangements to get her home inspection license, Johnson is on the fast track to open by the beginning of June, right in time for the busy summer moving season. She purchased the territory in the PeeDee region of South Carolina, which is experiencing a surge of growth as new businesses relocate to the area. The HomeTeam franchise model allows her to start small as an owner-operator and slowly add inspectors as the business starts to generate a profit.
“Max has made me feel like a different person. It has made me feel a lot better knowing there is an exciting and fulfilling future out there for me,” Johnson said.
