End the Corporate Ladder Climb

Does climbing the corporate ladder enable you to achieve your dreams? An information technology consulting executive taps career coaching from The Entrepreneur’s Source® to abandon the climb and take control of his destiny.

The Corporate Ladder is Broken

When you started your career did you imagine yourself slowly slogging your way up the endless corporate ladder? Did you think the climb would leave you feeling exhausted, battered, and bruised? Reaching the top of the corporate ladder is wishful thinking. As you spend more years with your nose to the grindstone, inevitably you’ll conclude you’re just collecting a paycheck while others determine your destiny.

Owen Sullivan came to this realization after spending 22 years climbing the corporate ladder at Accenture, a technology consulting firm. He started his career at Accenture as an intern while obtaining his de

gree in finance from Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia with high hopes. He held a number of executive-level roles during his tenure at the company. In his most recent position, Sullivan was a finance director and provided advisory services to the company’s chief financial officer.

After a corporate restructuring, Sullivan accepted a severance package to take a sabbatical from the daily grind. During his break from work, he took time to reflect on his career, catch up on home projects, and spend time with his family. He also diligently helped his wife get her home organization business, Juniper Bloom Organizing, formally up and running.

Coaching Offers New Path

When he was ready to rejoin the workforce, Sullivan initially relied on an executive career counseling firm to jumpstart his corporate job hunt. But spending time away from the corporate world helped solidify his decision to find a new career path. With an eye to business ownership, Sullivan began his career-coaching journey with a TES coach.

“I hadn’t had to update an external resume in years. As I was starting to look for a new position, I realized I didn’t want to be in a big corporate setting. I just couldn’t imagine myself restarting that grind or dealing with the politics,” Sullivan said.

The Entrepreneur’s Source helps people find a path forward by using education-based techniques to guide them as they explore their Income, Lifestyle, Wealth, and Equity™ goals. Many people turn to coaches after spending years dedicating their time and talents to help someone else’s business grow. They’re ready to find a way to invest in themselves but don’t know the options. TES coaches strive to create a safe, welcoming environment for people to discover enough about themselves to make informed decisions about their professional future.

Owen’s TES coach started opening peoples’ minds to new options, possibilities, and dreams after spending more than 30 years in the retail industry. Frustrated by the frequent mergers and acquisitions in his field, he exited retail and turned to business ownership. He launched a Filta Environmental Kitchen Solutions location. Filta provides commercial kitchens with cooking oil filtration, disposal, and recycling services.

Filta met his financial goals, but after his children finished college, he wanted a new opportunity with more flexibility. He sold his Filta location and started a career-coaching business. As TES coaches, we can create our own schedules and work anywhere with access to the internet. “During my career, I’ve led teams and mentored and coached my employees. I further honed my coaching mindset by leading my kids’ sports teams. I enjoy helping others achieve what they want to accomplish”

The experience Owen’s coach had as an entrepreneur helped give Sullivan the courage he needed to strike out on his own. Starting a new career after working in the corporate world for many years can be daunting. Having a TES coach as a guide makes the dream attainable and the journey rewarding.

“My coach was great for me, he had a similar background,” Sullivan said. “That was awesome because it was relatable. We hit it right off. He never gave me the hard sale. Everything was on my terms, and there was no pressure.”

Home Remodeling Business the Right Choice

After thorough research and reflection, Sullivan decided to open a Home Solutions business in the northern Virginia area. Home remodeling and repair is a thriving industry. Over 89% of homeowners were planning to do a home repair project in 2022, according to a survey conducted by Angi, an online home repair resource. And 30% of people surveyed plan to replace the flooring.

Sullivan opened his Home Solutions business in September and is currently obtaining a contractor’s license as he prepares for his grand opening in January 2023. He chose the business because it offered a scalable opportunity with state-of-the-art systems and a history of positive customer ratings. It also complemented the home organizing business his wife is spearheading. The business he joined developed a proven system with the necessary training and support to drive profits. This was far better than starting from zero.

“About 95% of our clients end up in a business that they admittedly would never look at on their own or had looked at and dismissed prematurely. Owen fell into that category” and “Initially, clients focus on what they know rather than what they don’t know. We challenge our clients to think and explore new and different opportunities.”
