Top 3 Career Building Tips for College Graduates from The Entrepreneur’s Source Terry Powell

The job market is tough, even for the young and hip millennial generation. A recent survey found that more than 40 percent of millennial, U.S. college graduates who had graduated in the past two years are unemployed. This is concerning to many college grads, considering that 51 percent of students report that they have anywhere between $10,000-50,000 in student loans. Many recent graduates are in fear of this accumulating debt and lack of job security.

The Entrepreneur’s Source Terry Powell on the Unfavorable Job Landscape
In America today, sometimes having a college degree isn’t enough. Many college graduates are resorting to finding internships or other part-time or temporary positions to help pay off their student debt.

“For a new college graduate to predetermine what their career will be fresh out of college can be difficult because the job market is a lot different from the way it has been in the past. Simply having a college degree does not guarantee them their dream job,” said founder of The Entrepreneur’s Source Terry Powell.

Due to this disparaging job landscape, more recent college graduates are looking for alternative opportunities to begin their professional futures.

“Recent college graduates must be able to open up their minds to possibilities that might be different from what they envisioned the job market looking like coming out of school,” Powell said.

The Entrepreneur’s Source Terry Powell’s Career Building Advice
But just what path are college students starting to take? Many recent college graduates are beginning to take their dreams down the entrepreneurial path, shifting their mindset from Employment to Empowerment. The Entrepreneur’s Source Terry Powell outlines his top three career building tips for college graduates.

  1. Consider the opportunity versus the job. Instead of working for corporate America, college graduates should deliberate investing in a business vehicle that will build them wealth and equity over time as opposed to solely gaining income. When considering this option, recent college grads should take a step back and try to envision their future and examine their Income, Wealth, Lifestyle and Equity goals. In the process of moving from Employment to Empowerment, college graduates should be open to varying types of possibilities, such as franchise business opportunities or entrepreneurship, and be open to turning these opportunities into long careers.
  2. Don’t limit yourself: Young college graduates should not limit themselves to the precise ideas they believe to be accurate regarding what they want to do and what they are qualified to do. College graduates can keep an open mind when considering job prospects that may fall outside of their comfort zone. This can be effectively done by ridding themselves of their limiting beliefs. In this New Career Economy, more job-seeking parents and children are teaming up and becoming business partners to take control of their professional dreams and destinies through the vehicle of franchising. Multigenerational partnerships are an innovative technique for both parents and children to take control of their professional futures. Older generations can learn a lot from younger college grads, and vice versa. So although this pairing may not seem like a good idea at first, it’s important to seek support and consider all of your options.
  3. Employ your skillset: If a recent college graduate decides to go the entrepreneurial route by investing in a franchise, then they should try and find an opportunity that allows them to leverage their unique talents. When identifying the right opportunity, college graduates should be able to utilize their knowledge or abilities to provide support, however it is a myth that you must love a product or service to be able to capitalize on it. This myth oftentimes limits young entrepreneurs when exploring future business prospects, so it’s important to keep the fact that it is untrue as top-of-mind knowledge.
