What is your definition of wealth? Is it endless money? Taking your private jet to your own island in the Caribbean? Having the mall all to yourself for a private shopping spree? Maybe owning a parking garage in the middle of Manhattan just so you will have a guaranteed spot for your car when you want to see a Broadway show?

Many of those scenarios are a bit fanciful (I mean who DOESN’T want to have their own private parking space in NYC?), but the idea is this: wealth can have just as many different definitions as there are people who work for a living in this country. Your wealth dreams probably are a bit more realistic than the ones listed above. Maybe you want that getaway place in the mountains or the beach, or making sure the kids can attend any college they wish, or having enough for a comfortable retirement.

Here’s my definition for what it’s worth: having enough money to do what you want to do, when you want to do it. Pretty simple, right? But it speaks VOLUMES!

In your current job, is your income moving you closer to YOUR dreams, or do those dreams appear as if you’re looking through the wrong end of a telescope at them? According to the latest Society for Human Resource Management survey, salaries are projected to increase 3% this year – the same as last year and simply not that impressive. Remember, that’s an AVERAGE, so IF you get a salary increase at all, it will likely be minuscule.

What about your lifestyle? Are you living to work, or just working to live? With an improving economy, more American workers are happier, but in a recent poll, more than 95% of workers stated work life balance was very important to them, even more so than salary, benefits, even job security! So, take stock right now: how’s YOUR work-life balance? Do you have more time for family, friends, hobbies, or activities, or do you have less?

Okay, so you’re putting in a lot of time, for an average salary, but do you have any equity in your job? I mean real ownership? Probably not. You are employed, but not empowered. You are making money for others, with little to show for it at the end of the day, except for a paycheck (which could be a corporate decision away from ending), or capped dollars in a retirement plan, which may, or may not be there when you retire.

Maybe it’s time to reassess your Income, Lifestyle, Wealth, and Equity goals, while becoming self-sufficient as a business OWNER, not an employee.
