A Millennial Carves a New Path

A Career Ownership Coach™ with The Entrepreneur’s Source® helped Dawris Gomez navigate a frustrating job search that led her down a new path to pursue the American dream.

Navigating a Career Crossroad

Shortly after receiving her master’s in public relations and business communication from New York University in 2016, Dawris started her career climbing the corporate ladder in the telecommunications industry. After only five years, the pandemic outbreak prompted new corporate policies at her workplace and left Dawris at a crossroads in her career. Initially, she started searching for a new role in corporate America. During her search, she was contacted by Chip Meyers, a TES career coach.

“I wasn’t enjoying my job search and decided to devote time to building my knowledge and educating myself on another opportunity,” Dawris said. “I felt really comfortable with Chip’s presentation, and coaching did not put me financially on the hook.”

Coach Helps Explore New Options

TES coaches use an education-based strategy to help people define their career and lifestyle goals and open their minds to new possibilities at no cost. Chip started his coaching career in 2018 after spending more than 25 years working long hours in executive-level sales positions for various packaging and labor solutions companies. As an entrepreneur, Chip no longer has to spend time on the road and can work at his own pace from the comfort of his home.

Chip admired Dawris’ drive and focus. As a millennial professional, Dawris already understood what she wanted from her career and was unwilling to settle for a job that didn’t meet her lifestyle and financial goals. “Dawris is a person with vision. She was dead set serious that she’d achieve her goals. She had conviction,” Chip said.

While exploring new possibilities with Chip, Dawris continued her job search. When an interview fell through, Dawris reached a moment of clarity.

“After an interview was canceled at the last minute, I started to wonder why I was fighting to join another organization just exactly like the one I left, where you don’t have agency or say. I realized I didn’t want to be at the mercy of random powers that be, who have no respect for you, your time, or your effort,” Dawris said. “I had reached that moment where enough is enough.”

Window Covering Business Opens Door to Financial Freedom

Dawris is not alone in her pursuit of a better future. To attain job security and self-sufficiency, a rising number of millennials are turning to business ownership. A whopping 77% of millennials hope to pursue entrepreneurship, according to a recent survey of 2,050 Americans conducted by Lending Tree, a financial services provider. Millennials are five times more likely to consider entrepreneurship following the pandemic outbreak than baby boomers.

Unlike many of her peers, who are pursuing business ownership by starting a side hustle, Dawris decided to open a business with a proven track record, training, and support. She partnered with Gotcha Covered in the Stamford, Connecticut, area. Gotcha Covered specializes in custom window treatments and window coverings. It’s a low-investment opportunity that allows business owners to work from a home office and create their own schedules.

“The people at Gotcha Covered are great, which is super important. There is no overhead and no inventory. And I love the creative portion of it,” Dawris said.

Dawris signed a franchise agreement in June 2022 and is concentrating on building her client base with new mover marketing and networking with business leaders in her community. She is excited about her future as a business owner.

“Dawris wanted control. She wanted a bigger say-so in her future, and she was going to find it,” Chip said.
